Spanish Speaking CSAM Users in the Dark Web: Findings from Spanish Language Respondents to ReDirection Surveys of CSAM Users in the Dark Web
Protect Children's latest ReDirection report reveals unprecedented findings on Spanish speaking respondents to Protect Children’s surveys in the dark web on CSAM users. This new information is invaluable in enhancing global child protection efforts and strengthening the fight to protect children from sexual violence online.

Key findings:
1.Many Spanish-speaking CSAM offenders were exposed to CSAM involuntarily and at an early age
A large majority of Spanish-speaking respondents reported that they first saw CSAM while they were children themselves. 70% of Spanish-speaking respondents were under 18, and 39% were under 13 years old. While this is a common trend among all languages, Spanish-speaking respondents were, on average, first exposed to CSAM at a younger age than English-speaking respondents.
2. A majority of Spanish-speaking CSAM offenders have recently started watching CSAM
Over 50% of Spanish-speaking respondents reported that they have been actively searching and viewing CSAM for 1-4 weeks, meaning that there are many new CSAM offenders. As the survey is placed on dark web search engines, we expected to reach this population of first-time CSAM offenders. CSAM perpetrators who have been using CSAM for a long time are unlikely to access CSAM via this platform, as they may have migrated to peer-to-peer networks or other online communities to access, share, and trade CSAM.
3. Spanish-speaking CSAM offenders search for CSAM depicting girls and boys at a ratio of 3:2
When asked the type of CSAM content they search for, nearly 40% of Spanish-speaking respondents reported viewing CSAM depicting girls aged 4-13 years, and 25% said they view material depicting boys of the same age bracket. Spanish-speaking CSAM offenders seem to search for CSAM depicting girls more than boys at a ratio of around 3:2, while English-speaking respondents viewed girls more than boys at a ratio of around 7:3. When asked about livestreamed CSAM, however, Spanish-speaking CSAM offenders reported watching livestreamed CSAM depicting boys more often than depicting girls.
4. Spanish-speaking respondents are less likely to report experiencing difficulties related to CSAM
Fewer Spanish-speaking respondents reported experiencing difficulties related to their use of CSAM than English-speaking respondents. While half of English-speaking respondents reported experiencing some difficulties, only 38% of Spanish-speaking respondents agreed. Nonetheless, the most reported difficulties related to CSAM use are common between Spanish and English-speaking respondents: difficulties with mental health, difficulties in close relationships, and substance abuse.
5. Most Spanish-speaking CSAM offenders have never sought help to stop searching, using, or sharing CSAM
Of the 2,769 Spanish-speakers who responded to the ReDirection surveys, around 30% chose to respond the ‘No need for help’ survey, indicating that they believe they do not need help for their use of, or interest in, CSAM.

El reporte de Protect Children revela hallazgos sin precedentes sobre los encuestados hispanohablantes que han participado en las encuestas dirigidas a personas usuarias de material de explotación sexual de niñas, niños y adolescentes (MESNNA) realizadas por Protect Children en buscadores de la Red Oscura. Esta nueva información es inestimable para mejorar los esfuerzos globales de protección infantil y fortalecer la lucha para proteger a niñas, niños y adolescentes de la violencia sexual en línea.
Principales resultados
1. Muchas personas usuarias de habla hispana de MESNNA tuvieron exposición a MESNNA de manera involuntaria y a edades tempranas
La mayoría de las personas hispanoparlantes que contestaron la encuesta reportaron que la primera vez que vieron MESNNA fue cuando eran todavía menores de edad; el 70% tenían menos de 18 años y el 39% del total eran menores de 13 años. Si bien esta es una tendencia presente en los demás idiomas, en promedio el grupo de personas encuestadas hispanoparlantes fueron expuestos a MESNNA en edades más tempranas que el grupo de personas encuestadas que hablaban inglés.
2. La mayoría de las personas usuarias de MESNNA de habla hispana han comenzado recientemente a ver MESNNA
Más del 50% de las personas encuestadas reportaron que han estado activamente buscando y viendo MESNNA de 1 a 4 semanas, lo que significa que muchas de las personas participantes son usuarias recientes de MESNNA. Esperábamos que la población que pudiéramos alcanzar con esta encuesta fueran nuevas usuarias y nuevos usuarios de MESNNA, dado que la encuesta estaba alojada en los buscadores de la Dark Web (Red Oscura). Las personas perpetradoras de MESNNA que han estado utilizando material por un tiempo prolongado, no tienden acceder a MESNNA a través de la Dark Web (Red Oscura) sino a través de redes entre pares u otras comunidades en donde se accede, comparte e intercambia MESNNA.
3. Las personas usuarias de MESNNA de habla hispana buscan MESNNA que muestra niñas y niños en una proporción de 3:2
Cuando se les preguntó por el tipo de contenido de MESNNA que buscaban, casi el 40% de las personas encuestadas de habla hispana reportaron ver MESNNA que muestra a niñas entre los 4-13 años, y el 25% mencionó que veían material que mostraba a niños en estos mismos rangos de edad. Las personas usuarias de MESNNA de habla hispana, parecen estar buscando más contenido de mujeres menores de edad que de hombres menores de edad en una proporción de 3:2, mientras que las personas usuarias angloparlantes ven contenido de niñas más que de niños en una proporción de 7:3 aproximadamente. Sin embargo, cuando se les preguntó por las transmisiones en vivo, las personas encuestadas de habla hispana reportaron ver transmisiones en vivo mostrando a niños más que a niñas.
4. Participantes de habla hispana tienen menos probabilidades de reportar haber experimentado dificultades relacionadas con MESNNA
En comparación con las personas usuarias angloparlantes, menos personas encuestadas de habla hispana reportaron tener dificultades relacionadas al uso de MESNNA. Mientras que la mitad de las personas encuestadas angloparlantes reportaron experimentar algunas dificultades, solamente el 38% de las personas encuestadas de habla hispana reportaron estos inconvenientes. Sin embargo, la dificultad más reportada relacionada al MESNNA es la misma entre los grupos de hispanoparlantes y angloparlantes que respondieron la encuesta: dificultades en la salud mental, dificultad en las relaciones cercanas y el abuso de sustancias.
5. La mayoría de las personas usuarias de MESNNA de habla hispana nunca han buscado ayuda para dejar de buscar, usar o compartir MESNNA
De las 2,769 personas encuestadas hispanoparlantes, cerca del 30% escogieron la opción de hacer la encuesta ‘No necesito ayuda’, indicando que no creían necesitar ayuda para el uso, o interés de MESNNA.
