Protect Children Receives Prestigious 'Academic Contribution Award'

NEWS

Protect Children has been awarded for its holistic, research-based approach to tackling online child sexual abuse and exploitation (OCSAE). We received the presitigious 'Academic Contribution Award' at the 2025 Excellence in Online Protection gala event.

Sam Lundrigan, Nina Vaaranen-Valkonen, and Simon Bailey at PIER24

We are also proud to share that Senior Specialist Katariina Leivo was nominated for the 'Victim Support Award' for her outstanding contributions to supporting and empowering families across Europe whose children have fallen victim to technology-facilitated sexual violence, especially within our You Are Enough project.

The prize distribution was organized in connection with the international IPPPRI25 conference, which brings together all the most important stakeholders in the field worldwide to develop and share information for the prevention of sexual crimes against children, especially those which are technology-facilitated.

This award highlights our ongoing pursuit of an end to all childhood sexual violence. By gathering unique, first-hand data, Protect Children has gained an in-depth understanding of emerging threats to online child safety and immediately acted upon research results. Turning research into action, in only 2 years, Protect Children:

  • Amplified the voices and wisdom of 22,640 survivors of childhood sexual violence worldwide with the Our Voice Global Survivor Survey.

  • Guided 650 offenders daily to stop the use of child sexual abuse material (CSAM) with the ReDirection Self-Help Program.

  • Organised and facilitated body boundaries and online safety workshops for 11,981 children in Finland with our Online Road Safety project.

  • Informed efforts of major tech companies to combat OCSAE through analysing the behaviour of over 54,000 online child sexual abuse offenders with our ReDirection survey.

We are honored that our efforts to end OCSAE have been recognised internationally and would like to extend gratitude to our many colleagues around the world for their unwavering support in all we do. This award highlights our dedication to protecting children, and we will continue pursuing our mission to end all childhood sexual violence.
