Our Voice Male Survivors: Experiences of Victims and Survivors of Child Sexual Abuse and Exploitation

Child sexual abuse affects an estimated 1 in 7 boys, yet their experiences are often overlooked. This report amplifies the voices of 1,431 male survivors from the Global Our Voice Survivor Survey, revealing distinct patterns of abuse, disclosure, and long-term impact, and calling for action to ensure boys and men receive the prevention, support, and care they need.

“How difficult it is for a man to feel broken, or to even recognize that we are broken.”

Quote from a male survivor in response to the Global Our Voice Survivor Survey.

Key Findings:

  • Early abuse: Many boys first experience abuse before age 10.

  • Types of abuse: Most commonly nude genital touching; boys are more likely than girls to be abused by women or people under 18.

  • Disclosure barriers: Boys are less likely to disclose, often tell friends rather than professionals, and shame is a major barrier.

  • Long-term impact: 78% report lasting negative effects, especially depression, but fewer than girls acknowledge these impacts.

  • Support gaps: Few boys receive support; coping often involves self-blame, withdrawal, or ignoring the abuse.
